![]() ![]() The hard, straight lines of a building can contrast well with the natural lines of a landscape to create a great symmetrical photograph. Try looking for symmetry in your landscape photography using natural or man-made elements, or both. Symmetry is visually pleasing to our eyes in many ways, and photography is no exception. One of those times is when you use symmetry in your photography. Rules are a great way to understand and improve your photography composition, but sometimes those rules can be broken. Many cameras now have the option to overlay grids in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen so you can see these rules in action as you frame up your landscape photography composition. The more you practice these principles within your landscape photography composition, the more it will become second nature. The easiest way to understand what these two rules are is to see them visually. I’m not sure what’s golden about them, but I do know that they can help you break out of the rule of thirds and open up even more pleasing compositions in your landscapes. The first is the “ Golden Ratio” and the second is the “Golden Triangle”. There are a couple more guides that can help you to compose your landscapes in a more visually pleasing way. It’s a solid rule for good photography composition, but don’t limit your landscapes to just the rule of thirds. Basically, it works on the principle that the human eye is naturally drawn to objects roughly one third into an image. One of the very first compositional lessons most of us learn as beginner photographers is the “ Rule of Thirds”. Most of the time your composition will work better in one version, while at times it will look great in both horizontal and vertical format. Force yourself to make both horizontal and vertical version of your landscape shot. I heard many times from beginners (and not so beginners) in landscape photography “I have such a hard time breaking the habit in using horizontal format for my landscape shots” It will make you think a bit differently about composition and give variety to your portfolio. This is much easier way to break the nasty habit of shooting landscapes only in horizontal format. Second option is to start shooting landscape or seascape images in portrait orientation. Many photographers shoot landscape for years and never come with anything remotely original. As you can imagine it is very difficult task and not easy to achieve. If you succeed it will be something that will differentiate you from the rest of the thousands and thousands of landscape photographers and put a individual mark on your work. Find a comply different and unique way to compose and create your landscape images in horizontal format. There is a good reason why this orientation is called landscape isn’t it? □ It is great for capturing vast splendor in front of your eyes, but soon you will realize that constantly repeating landscape format is bothering you, everything starts to look the same. If you are shooting a lot of landscapes or seascapes images you will notice that vast majority of your images are in…well you guessed it. ![]()
